PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Former Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy is lobbying against legalized marijuana.
Reuters reports the 45 year old Democrat is leading Project SAM or Smart Approaches to Marijuana, which opposes legalization of the drug.
Instead, Project SAM is lobbying for increased funding for mental health courts and treatment of drug dependency.
Kennedy, who has struggled with addiction, also wants to see the U.S. government allocate more of its $25 billion drug control budget to treatment and prevention, rather than drug law enforcement.
Project SAM will put forth its plan on Wednesday in Denver, Colorado.
The Marijuana Policy Project, an advocacy group that supports legalization, criticized Kennedy on Tuesday for his stance and labeled him a "booze fortune heir" on its Twitter feed.
