What is your book about?? The five key focus areas to skyrocket your profit.

What inspired you to write your book?
80% of small business owners and entrepreneurs don?t have a firm grasp on their numbers. Being good at the ?doing part? of your business isn?t enough. You must be on top of your numbers if your business is to be really successful. Typically, many people are scared of the numbers side of their business and tend to adopt an ostrich mentality with their head in the sand because of this fear. Sure, adopting such an approach may feel good for a while but by choosing to do this, these very same people risk their business failing.? I believe there is tremendous power of entrepreneurialism and numeracy and this book is the start of trying to create the ?business success intersection? for small business owners and entrepreneurs.

How did you come to do what you?re doing today?
I am a fully qualified accountant with over 12 years working experience across an array of industries and business sizes. From working as a Finance Director in a small business I know numbers and have learnt the specific areas to focus on the rapidly grow profits over the years which I reveal in Profit Rocket. For many years I suppressed my inner entrepreneur justifying that the timing wasn?t right. Well, what I realized is that the timing is never completely right so I made a bold decision in early 2011 to resign from role as Finance Director and set up my company Profit in Focus Ltd. I gave up a six-figure salary in the middle of arguably the worst recession in living memory to embark on my new initiative, which some said I was crazy to be doing, but the tremendous passion I have for what I do compelled me into action. I won?t say it has been an easy transition, it definitely hasn?t, but it isn?t a decision I would go back on in a heartbeat.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?
What I absolutely love is that no two days are the same for me. Some days can be back-to-back meetings with exciting people exploring ways that we can potentially help each other. You see that is my approach to business. It is about seeking out mutual benefit with other business owners and taking a collaborative approach. It?s about asking the question, ?What can we do to help each other that results in a Win/Win result for both parties?? I love exploring possibilities with people and finding out what motivates people. Everyone has a unique story to tell and their own take on the world.? Other days can be working on strategic initiatives for my business, creating new products, promotional activities for the book, delivering workshops and working 1-to-1 with my clients. None of it feels like work though because I am having so much fun with it.

What do you most enjoy about what you do?
It has to be the people that I interact with. I get really excited when I speak to people that are clearly passionate about what they do but perhaps aren?t as strong on the financial side of their business as they should be. The reason I get excited is because I know the potential that exists for that small business owner or entrepreneur when they step up their game on the numbers and am completely thrilled when the results start happening for them. I love seeing the proverbial ?light bulb? go on for people when they truly ?get it?.

Are there any people and/or books that have inspired you along your journey?
This might sound corny but I find bits of inspiration in all I do whether it be from conversations I have, people I meet, books I read or things I observe. I always try to keep an open mind and derive great pleasure from seeing my friends, colleagues and clients succeed in what they do.

Can you share some business tips for our readers?

  1. Numbers aren?t to be feared. They won?t bite!
  2. Don?t be an ostrich with your head in the sand ignoring the numbers side of your business
  3. Building a business isn?t always easy. You must celebrate your successes along the way
  4. Balance between ?Optimism? and ?Realism?. Grounded optimism is best.
  5. You must understand your ?bottom-line? profit
  6. Revenue vs. profitable revenue ?- there is a difference
  7. A profit that?s banked is king.

What?s next for you?

That?s the big question! Who knows what is going to happen with the launch of Profit Rocket. I hope it will be well received and that opportunities emerge because of it. I have developed and will continue developing more tools, resources and products to help the very small business owners and entrepreneurs that it is my primary objective to support. Watch this space as they are launched over the coming time.

My vision is to spear-head a new wave of enlightened small business owners and entrepreneurs who aren?t only passionate about what they do but who are also ?very hot? on the numbers side of their business. Profit Rocket is just the start!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Life is not a dress rehearsal so be bold and go after what you want. I did! Do what it takes to make it happen. Your future is in your hands.
